1. Soft Rains Will Come

Words by Sara Teasdale

Music by Richard C. Davis

Richard C. Davis is the writer/composer of something over 700 songs. Many of these were adapted from verse written by the world's great English and American poets. The music for "Soft Rains Will Come" was written in 1964, and recorded as part of "The Three D's" first Capitol Records release, "New Dimensions in Folk Songs." Denis likes this song so much he included it in this new album. (Also, a new CD release of the original album is available from Phoenix Records, Inc, re-titled "The Original 3D's Poetry Album." (See home page for details or click on link.)

Sara Teasdale, not the least of the late 19th Century American poets, was well-known for her opposition to war. In addition to writing many children's poems, she also gave vent to her political feelings in this not-so-subtle poetic complaint on the futility of man's inhumanity to man. Her words made song-lyric, coupled with Dick Davis' melodic artistry and chord sequences combine for a timeless, classic message. The arrangement and the solo are by Denis, with tasteful and telling harmonies from Sherisse.

Soft rains will come, and the smell of the ground
And swallows circling, with their shimmering sound,
And frogs in the pools, singing all the night
And the wild plum trees, in their trem'lous white.

Robins will wear their feathery fire
And whistle their whims on a low fence wire.
And not one will know of the war, no, not one;
Nor care at last, when it all was done.

Not one would mind, neither bird nor tree
If all mankind perished utterly.
And spring herself, when she awoke at dawn,
Would scarcely know that we all were gone.
